A lock is one of the most dangerous places to dive. You learn how the locking process works, what risks come with it and how to search safely in a lock chamber.

What will you learn?

  • Describe how a lock and the locking process work
  • Recognise the specific risks around locks (water movement, suction, limited space)
  • Draw up a work plan/task risk analysis (TRA) for a lock location
  • Arrange the stopping of the locking process and shipping with the lock operators
  • Apply adapted search methods in a lock chamber

Can be extended with (optional)

  • Diving in current (IKB 210, OD25) as preparation for water movement
  • Calculating air consumption (IKB 216)

About the training

This training covers the theory and practice of diving in and around locks. Locks have specific risks due to the locking process, water movement and suction at sluice gates and sewer outlets. The training combines knowledge of how a lock works with practical exercise in a simulated lock chamber.

Duration
1 practice day (guideline: 2 half-day sessions). The final number of dives and the time schedule follow from the work plan and the dive planning.
Target group
Registered fire brigade divers and dive team leaders who need to keep this exercise up to standard within their two-year registration period. Suitable for SCUBA and OLV configurations; regions that dive with OLV as standard mainly practise with OLV.
Required per 2 years
fire brigade diver n/a, dive team leader n/a
Location
Theory room — BC-opleidingen, Enkhuizen (theory) / Markermeer open water — BC-opleidingen, Enkhuizen (practice at the quay wall, simulated lock chamber)

What does the law require?

Fire brigade divers and dive team leaders have been registered with the NIPV since 1 October 2024. To keep your registration, you show every two years, with your logbook, that you have practised enough. The industry guideline on ongoing professional competence (2026) determines which exercises these are. At BC-opleidingen every course follows that guideline, and you receive the right code for your logbook.
